CONCEPT The Super Organism examines and reproduces the experience of becoming part of a murmuration of starlings. It consists of hundreds individual entities which form a larger entity all together. Each individual element reacts to the other, while the entity as a whole reacts to the input from the environment. DRIFT is fascinated by self organising structures in nature. In these natural patterns we recognize the choices and structures we cope with in in our own lives. With this artwork we question the role of the individual versus the group. Of freedom versus conformity. The elements are abstract forms of mirrored coloured glass with a LED light source underneath. During the day the natural light and colours of the environment are reflected in the glass. At night, the LED lights underneath each element light up the element, creating a reflective swarm that reacts to the visitors surrounding the artwork. The Super Organism is a further development of DRIFT’s Flylight and uses the same algorithmic murmuration patterns. It is created especially for large-scale outdoor installations that react to the natural environment and can handle extreme weather conditions.
INTERACTIVITY SWARMING BEHAVIOUR The pattern in which the installation lights up mimics the behaviour of a murmuration of starlings and shifts in response to its environment via several sensors placed along the neighbouring pathway and immediate surrounds. The scientific parameters in our bird swarm algorithm are choreographed by the artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta in order to channel the emotional impact of the work. Whilst the general behaviour is programmed the movement itself is not pre-programmed. Therefore, Super Organism constantly makes its own choices, the behavior does not repeat itself. When approaching Super Organism the swarm of light may move towards you. After losing interest, the swarm will again fluently follow its own path.
MATERIALS & FINISHES The elements are abstract forms of mirrored coloured glass with a LED light source underneath. During the day the natural light and colours of the environment are reflected in the glass. At night, the LED lights underneath each element light up the element, creating a reflective swarm that reacts to the visitors surrounding the artwork. In addition to movement, light plays an essential role in Super Organism. Each element has a light source, the intensity and color of which are influenced by a multidimensional array of aerodynamic properties, emphasizing the density of the group.
