Every Tree of Ténéré will have its own specific shape and size, due to the advanced software the artists use to stimulate the natural grow, considering site specific environmental factors.
The artists work closely with the client to examine the site and make the works sit perfectly in the designated space.

CONCEPT
Tree of Ténéré represents the strongest symbol of life flourishing in the most difficult circumstances. This dynamic artwork is sculpted according to the natural growth of the tree in its surroundings.
An ancient story tells us that the isolated Tree of Ténéré, only to be found in Sahara desert, had a ceremonial function to bring people together for ritual and rest.
DRIFT explores new ways of connecting people to each other and earth, by using innovative technology. As seen more often in their work, the artists shed light on the tension between the real and the virtual world. The Tree of Ténéré is a partnership between Zachary Smith, Mark C. Slee and DRIFT.
GROWTH + MODELLING
With the use of advanced software, the Tree of Ténéré artwork is digitally ‘grown’ as an entirely organic entity. Taking environmental factors, such as incidence of light, the presence of surrounding structures, gravity and a multitude of environmental factors in consideration, the artwork will be modelled custom to its location, as unique as a tree in nature.
Once the Tree of Ténéré is grown, each artwork is revised and hand modelled by the artists to define the final character of the piece.
Light will move across the canopy of the artwork, in response to the artwork’s surroundings.
The branches and bark are cast from a real tree and hand finished by a team of specialist technicians.
The leaves are designed to shift and sway in the wind, to reflect this subtle movement across the bough of a natural tree. Due to every evolving nature of the Tree of Ténéré artworks, visualisations shared prior to installation are provided as a close approximation of the piece, however final elements of the artwork’s composition may vary.
