CONCEPT
Franchise Freedom is a performative artwork at the intersection of technology, science and art. A swarm of 300 luminous drones perform a 12 minute aerial choreography based on autonomous murmuration patterns of birds.
To create Franchise Freedom, DRIFT studied the natural flight behavior of starlings and translated this into software that has been specially developed and embedded in the drones.
The parameters in the swarm algorithm are choreographed by the artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta in order to channel the emotional impact of the performance. Each performance is site-specific and unique, and the drones will react to their environment in an unpredictable, autonomous way.
Together with their unique movements, light plays an equally important role in Franchise Freedom. Each drone has a light source, the intensity and color of which are influenced by the distance between the drones, emphasizing the density of the group.

FRANCHISE FREEDOM - A FLYING SCULPTURE WITH DRONES
We offer a site-specific unique performance, developed with the Franchise Freedom software, specifically designed to suit the location. Every performance is accompanied by and choreographed to the music of Joep Beving, ‘Ab Ovo’, unless otherwise agreed.
Duration: up to 12 minutes, depending on weather conditions.
Actors: 300 drones operated by Intel Shooting Star technology, a larger number up to 1500 drones is possible upon request.
Package: a total of 3 performances on 3 consecutive evenings. 2 performances per night optional.
Lead time: 2-3 months, dependant upon permits and complexity.
A Franchise Freedom performance is built upon the following elements:
Fixed cost:
· Unique site-specific choreography
· Flight permits
· Drone fleet rental
· Site visit prior to the event (time, travel and expenses excluded)
· Specialized team
· Test days
· Liability and flight insurance
· Music, ‘Ab Ovo’ by Joep Beving (recorded)
· Professional film recording
· 3 performances on max 3 consecutive nights
· 2 photographic prints of the performance
The motif of the photo may be used for an edition in a different size

NOTE: Franchise Freedom is a weather permitting performance. IN heavy rain or storm, we are not allowed to fly due to safety requirements. DRIFT is responsible for making this judgement and cannot be held responsible for detrimental weather conditions.
