CONCEPT Nyctinasty is a highly evolved natural mechanism that controls the ability of certain flowers to close at night in self-defense and to conserve their resources. This principle relates very much to human emotions. Most man-made objects and buildings have a static form, while everything natural in this world, including people, are subject to constant metamorphosis and adaptation to their surroundings. With Shylight, DRIFT is exploring those changes that express character and emotions in an installation of inanimate objects. Shylight, a performative sculpture, unites the movement of industrial motors with silk chalice-like structures into a natural choreography, with the goal of finding live emotion and personality in a dead material.
MOVEMENT Working mechanism Shylight has become an object that feels alive because of unpredictable, natural-looking movements: it descends to blossom in all its glorious beauty, to subsequently close and retreat upward again. Shylight is created out of many layers of silk, which cause it to move with the grace of a dancer.
CHOREOGRAPHY The movement of the work can be controlled to the millimeter to create a subtle choreography. For each installation, we make a custom choreography supervised by the artists themselves. It is possible to add a second programming to the choreography.
