Fearsome Acquiescence of a Monotonous Life features a two-channel video embedded within a sculptural installation — an architectural structure that evokes the haveli in Patiala that Kaleka grew up in. The videos, displayed on the windows of the structure demand an intimate viewing, recalling the experience that bioscopes provided. In one video, balls of tumbleweed roll on the ground in front of a door; and in the other, a man watches himself walking into the house and ultimately into himself, in an infinite loop. The viewer becomes simultaneously conscious of their voyeuristic position and complicit in the monotony elicited through the films that reflect Kaleka’s insular life in his childhood home. By conjuring the space that opened up an alternative, introspective world for Kaleka, this work invites viewers to immerse in the artist’s own universe.
